Week 17

This week we did an easy, festive art project. We finished up the Middle Ages in history and wrapped up the reading on Venus. The 2nd picture is Samuel coloring in our model of Venus, with Oliver watching closely. We finished our Christmas read aloud and our advent readings (early but we had to fit it in). It was a full week but we had a Christmas escape room activity on Friday to wrap up school before break. We’re now off for 2 weeks!

Week 16

This week was pretty much normal for us. We wrapped up our study of Mercury and started on Venus. We finished our art project and continued our other work. We’re focused on wrapping stuff up for break!!

Week 15

Back to school for 3 weeks!  We are focused on the upcoming Christmas break!  This week, we began an art project that has already challenged us a bit.  We'll see how it turns out next week.  We started our study of Mercury and continued our study of the Middle Ages.  We paused our read aloud to start a Christmas story about mice.  It's definitely for younger kids but it's fun to have a seasonal read aloud! Our writing is interesting because we are using pictures to create an outline for our paragraphs.  I think they enjoy being more creative.  We had a visit from our supervising teacher this week so we're done with all MHSAP duties until the new {calendar} year!

Week 14

We had 2 days of school this week so it was pretty easy. We reached a stopping point in our read aloud because we’re starting a Christmas book next week! The boys made grilled cheese and soup for their culinary lab under Brian’s supervision. We played Middle Ages bingo and did a turkey escape room for math so we had a fun break from the usual! Back to regular subjects Monday for 3 weeks until Christmas break!

Week 13

The boys wrapped up their art class this week so we celebrated with Cold Stone.  Neither one liked it that much so I guess we won't do that again!  Ha!

We also got the trees decorated this week!  Just the boys wanted to help but I'm glad for any help.  It's a big job!

We were unable to complete our science activity this week because it required sun.  We are moving on to the inner planets and worked on creating our own mnemonic to remember the names.  We also learned about life in the Middle Ages and they wrote a paper on spacesuits.  It was a productive week!

Week 12

This week was a birthday week!  This is the 1st time we have had school on a birthday because the twins both worked all day.  They are growing up!  We celebrated at Red Robin and Hunter's manager sent a cake home with him.  It was a fun night!

For school, the boys finally got their culinary lab done, which was making mac and cheese.  It was really good!!  Otherwise, we started the middle ages in history and are still finishing up our study of the sun.  I was counting the number of days until Christmas break and it's coming up fast!!  We'll see what all we can accomplish before that!

The boys watched the Mike Tyson boxing match on Friday night but had to use the iPad because of a Netflix issue on our TV halfway through.  It was funny to see them all gathered around the small screen.

Week 11

This week, the boys had art class on Monday. We had to take our cat to the vet Tuesday so that was quite the excitement! We also got our trees up but it’ll be another week or so before they’re decorated. School is pretty much the same old thing. I’m trying to keep us on track to make a dent in our progress before the holiday break!

Week 10

We had a busy week!  On Monday, we had Harry Potter orchestra field trip and the boys started an art class.  On Tuesday, they practiced knife skills by slicing up peppers and onions for fajitas.  Thursday was Halloween!  We had a short day Friday to recover from the week.  :) Of course we did get some normal schoolwork done through the week, as well!

Week 9

This week, we finished reading about the older and current models of the solar system and did a quick sticker model.  We have a more intensive model we'll be working on throughout the year, though!  We also tried astronaut food and there were divided opinions.  We met our supervising teacher and that was actually a fun visit!  We finished our read aloud (finally, it was a bore) and started the next one.  The new one is about a group of boys who discover a bomb was accidentally dropped into a lake so from the onset, it's a little more interesting.  We ended our week with pumpkin carving!  It's always fun to see the creations.

Week 8

No pictures of school this week because it was an extremely busy week with appointments. The boys got the main things done but there was no time for extras. We’re also attempting to see the visible comet but have not had luck yet! Next week, we will meet our supervising teacher and have more time to get everything done!

Week 7

This week was busy with dentist appointments but we got work done, too.  The only pictures I got were of the Northern lights.  We called it a field trip.  It was pretty exciting for us!! Otherwise, school as usual.  There was a complaint about "all the work" assigned this week but I assured them that they would survive.

Week 6

We had school pictures on Monday and a field trip on Thursday this week! This was our 13th trip to Bloomsbury with the homeschool group and it’s not as fun for their age but it’s tradition! We did manage to get normal schoolwork done this week, as well!!

Week 5

A full week of school this week!  We've enjoyed doing some seasonal art projects just for fun.  Otherwise, we've been busy with all the things!  We haven't really changed anything from the beginning so that is a good sign.  October will be a busy month with 2 field trips and an outside art class starting so it's nice to have a solid week of work while we can!

Week 4

This week was a very short one with only 2 full days of school and one half day.  I had a colonoscopy scheduled so we took one day for prep and one day for the procedure off.  They didn’t care at all to miss 2 days!  Haha.  They had a breakfast assignment for culinary lab.  It was supposed to involve avocados but they didn’t ripen in time.  We finished up Greek history, started a new science lesson on the units astronomers use to measure distances, and worked on a new outline for writing. I’m looking forward to a full week of work next week!

Week 3

I guess I didn't get many pictures this week.  We use sharpies and watercolor to make folk art trees.  Our culinary lab was about recording how many of each food group we ate the previous day.  I don't know if they cared about their low veggie intake or not.  We watched a video about Greek mythology and studied the history of astronomy.  It was a full week!  Nathan had his first math quiz and got 100.  They both had a grammar test and that was ok but more practice is needed!  It was a busy week!

Week 2

This was a short week of school but we accomplished plenty!  We are sticking with our read aloud because the reviews are good but I keep waiting for it to get interesting.  The boys made cookies for Culinary Lab and they were very good.  In art, we made a color wheel using fruit, which they drew and cut out.  Nathan enjoyed researching random fruits for his.  We watched a quick video on black holes for science.  The topic is definitely keeping Samuel engaged, which isn't always easy!

First Week!

We started school on Monday!  We had a very easy day just going through what we are using this year for school and going through the schedule.  We had lunch out and went swimming because it was extremely hot.  We are still trying out our read aloud--it seems a little uninteresting thus far.  I tried out our art project ahead of time so I was all set but we couldn't get the transfer to work when it was time.  Oh well!  Otherwise, things are going well for this first week.

New School Year! 2024-2025

Some glimpses of our summer!  Brian and I celebrated our 24th anniversary.  Lily traveled to Washington, DC.  Nathan got a giant icee for helping me one day.  Hunter had surgery.  We saw movies (Twisters with Sam and Deadpool with Lainey, Anden, Hunter and Nathan).  Brian had fun fishing on his camping trip.  Sam had senior pics taken and, finally, we had a fun family vacation (minus Lily).  Now we are gearing up for the start of another school year.

Our Homeschool Plans:

Sam is a senior (!!!) this year and Nathan is a freshman!!  2 highschoolers!  We will be getting a new supervising teacher so that's always interesting.  The boys are signed up for one class at MHSAP and we'll go on field trips, as well.

For classes, here is our curriculum plan:

-World History
-Astronomy
-IEW for writing
-Language Lessons for a Living Education for grammar and spelling
-Various books for reading (both independent and read alouds) and the Reading Detective for comprehension
-Spanish 1 for Nathan
-Medical Terminology for Sam
-Culinary workbook for both
-Apologia Who Am I? for Bible
-Teaching Textbooks for both and a Practical Math book for Sam
-Art will be various projects

This is the 1st year I have zero Barton for the boys!!!  Of course, this is just the beginning so we'll see how we like the choices I've picked.  I'm excited to get started and help Sam adjust to the thought of being done with homeschool!!!!!
